Our History

Established in 1933, we have a long history on the Mountain

Past & Present

The Nelson Ski Club was formed in 1944 with a founding membership of 75 people. At its peak in 1977 there were 700 members enjoying great skiing serviced by 5 rope tows. The huts are an 1 1/2 hour walk from the Mt Robert car park, St Arnaud which is about 1 1/4 hours drive from Nelson.

The last time the ski area was fully operational was the winter of 2003. Since then the ski tows have been removed and the club has relocated to Rainbow ski area. The remaining facilities are two alpine huts, Robert and Christie, a large generator shed and a workshop and fuel storage shed, these have all been purchased by the Mt Robert Foundation.

The Mt Robert Foundation’s aim is to preserve thehistory of the area by encouraging the use of the huts to members so they can enjoy the alpine environment in both summer and winter.

The Foundation has negotiated a new 15 year lease beginning in 2009 with the ability to extend. This lease allows the installation of a ski-tow to serve a beginners slope, should members choose to do this in the future. Joining the Foundation will preserve the huts and give you the opportunity to own part of this unique alpine facility.
